Camping in Portugal - Nomadstyle

The moment we exit the plane in Faro, the fresh sea breeze floated first into my nose, then into my brain, filled it with immediate relaxation and kicked all little worries out of my head.

Welcome to Faro in the south coast of Portugal

After a short but comfortable sleep, next to a coffee shop in the departure hall, lulled to sleep by the built up area right next to us, we made our way to Aljezur.

Sleepy we sat at the train station in Lagos at 7am on a Sunday morning and watched the young kids getting back from a sweaty party night.

Then finally we arrived at the beach and were happy to see that our friends had already built up a little tent village.

Right in front of our Beduin Camp was a tidal river.

Tidal means that the river is changing with the tides from a small puddle into a raging stream.

In the evening you could see thousands and thousands of stars and the moon shone so bright if there were moonglasses like sunglasses they would have been useful. I saw many falling stars and even the milky way was visible!

At night we fell asleep the two of us in a tent for one, but since my friend forgot her sleeping bag we had to cuddle a bit anyways.

The mumbling voices in the tents next to us and the monotone sound of the nearby ocean made us fall asleep immediately.

The nights were cool but refreshing and the next morning we woke up early by the sun shining into our tent and warming it up.

In the mornings the coffee junkies (including me) gathered around the gas cooker for some of the powerful liquid to kickstart into the day and then had a first swim in the fresh water.

The next days basically consisted of grocery shopping for up to 20 people, cooking for everyone, reading, having lots of inspiring conversations, swimming, surfing and doing Yoga (Juga @jule <3).

None of our precious time has been taken by checking Facebook or E-Mails, caring about how we looked, caring about things we have to do or meetings we have to attend, it also hasn’t been taken by shaving or showering either, cause there was no shower close by.

Our hair became nearly dreadlocks with the salt in it but we felt clean and I realized that all the cosmetics we use daily make us smell bad in combination with sweat. I think nobody smelled bad, washed by the sea.

We all smelled like little sea turtles, just great :)

Information on the Trip:

From Faro Airport to Aljezur: Take Bus Number 14 or 16 to Faro city and take either the train or the bus to Lagos (First Bus is at 6:15 am also on sundays) which is a 2h ride and costs around 5€. From there you can get to several different beaches along the coast which are all beautiful and never too crowded. Great surf spots included ;)

Protect the environment:

Collect your trash and use the nearby restaurant for using the toilet. Don't walk around in the dunes since they are very vulnerable and vital for the coastal environement. You can find further information here.

Thank you everyone for making this an unforgettable trip! <3
